1936 FIRST PRINTING

CLIMBING MEMBER ACCOUNT OF EVEREST 1922 AND 1924

WITH VERY UNCOMMON ORIGINAL DUST JACKET

This is the first printing of the first UK edition of AFTER EVEREST - THE EXPERIENCES OF A MOUNTAINEER AND MEDICAL MISSIONARY by T. Howard Somervell. This book was published in 1936 by Hodder & Stoughton in London. The book measures 228mm tall x 144mm, and has 339 pages, 22 b/w photo plates, folding map + EP map, bibliography, index. Author’s personal accounts of the British 1922 & 1924 attempts on Everest & autobiographical notes mostly related to his medical work & travels in India following the 1924 climb. On the 1922 expedition Somervell, Mallory and Norton became the first people ever to climb above 8000 meters under their own power (several balloon guys had gone higher, some dying). They reached about 8200 meters on Everest without supplemental oxygen. He joined the 1924 expedition, climbing to 28,000 feet, but was plagued this time with throat problems from the dry air. Somervell was an extremely gifted man with disparate talents. He was also one of the strongest & smartest of all the early Everest climbers. About half the book is on Everest.

CONDITION: Original green cloth with gilt lettering spine. The book is in nice condition with spine that is not faded. Normally the spine of this book is severely faded, but the spine of this example is not faded due to the protection from light by the dust jacket. There are some very faint foxing-like spots on spine (barely detectable), some EP foxing, and some foxing (not much) opposite some of the photo plates, tight binding, previous owner name and date penned to corner of front EP, no other previous owner marks or writing on any pages. The scarce original dust jacket has some loss at spine ends (see photo), foxing spots on rear panel, some minor diffuse soiling, original price of "18/- net" is present on front flap corner. Price: $250.
