BY F. S. SMYTHE
1933 SECOND EDITION
HIGHEST MOUNTAIN CLIMBED AT THE TIME
This is the second printing of the first edition of KAMET CONQUERED by F. S. Smythe. This book was published in 1933 by Victor Gollancz Ltd in London. This is in a slightly smaller format than the first printing with different colored covers and black lettering spine instead of gilt lettering, but has the same photos and maps (unlike later reprints that have far fewer photos). It is noted as the "cheaper edition" on the copyright page, but the paper quality is about the same as that of the first printing. The book measures 221mm tall x 141mm, and has 420 pages, 59 b/w photos, 3 maps (1 is a folding map), index. The team included future Everest pioneers Eric Shipton & Raymond Greene, and the pioneering ski-mountaineer R. L. Holdsworth. This is the main account of the first ascent of Kamet (7756m) by Smythe, Shipton, Holdsworth, & Sirdar Lewa. This was the highest mountain climbed at the time. After Kamet was ascended, members of the party made 11 other first ascents, most at the head of Arwa Valley (Badrinath Range) and crossed 3 virgin passes. Also, Holdsworth experimented with high altitude skiing on Kamet.
