everest print

Original 1978 issue of the print of Keith Shackleton's painting, THE NORTH FACE OF EVEREST, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the first ascent, and a tribute to the early Everest climbers of the 1920s and 1930s. This print was published in England by the Royal Geographical Society in 1978. It measures 24 inches tall x 36 inches. The print has been numbered and signed by the artist, Keith Shackleton. Most impressive is that the print has been signed additionally by John Noel, Noel Odell, John Hunt, Chris Bonington, and Doug Scott. John Noel was a member of the 1922 and 1924 Everest attempts. He is the person who commissioned the painting for this print, with the proceeds to be donated to the Mount Everest Foundation and Sir Edmund Hillary's Sherpa Hospital. Keith Shackleton was chosen as the artist, because of his talent and the fact that he had visited Everest (Khumbu side) in person. This painting was made while viewing several of Noel's original photographic prints, ones showing extreme detail since they were created from large format negatives. Noel, Eric Shipton and Jim Gavin -- all with extensive experience on the North Side of Everest -- advised Shackleton during the painting process. Shortly after the prints of this painting were produced, the original painting was totally destroyed in a fire at the London gallery where it was being displayed. For more information about the painting and the artist, click on the following link where a book by Shackleton, Wildlife and Wilderness. An Artist's World, is being offered by JP MOUNTAIN BOOKS. This book contains an image of the Everest painting and Shackleton's explanatory text regarding the painting.
