THE GREAT WHITE SOUTH:

OR WITH SCOTT IN THE ANTARCTIC

BY HERBERT G. PONTING

1950 UK HARDCOVER EDITION

GREAT PHOTOS FROM THE 1910-1913 EXPEDITION

This is the 1950 reprint of the UK edition of THE GREAT WHITE SOUTH: OR WITH SCOTT IN THE ANTARCTIC by Herbert G. Ponting. This book was published in London by Gerald Duckworth & Co. Ltd in 1950. The book measures 223mm tall x 141mm, and has 299 pages + [2] + 48 leaves of plates (179 b/w photos & illustrations). Firsthand account of the R. F. Scott's British Antarctic Expedition 1910-1913. Ponting was the photographer for the expedition, the first professional photographer in Antarctica. “Ponting’s pictures—portraits and landscapes—are perhaps the greatest ever taken of the Antarctic.” Frank Hurley's are pretty good, too -- and he went through hell, too many times. The first edition of this book, published in 1922, nearly always lacks the dust wrapper and has severe condition problems, namely, a very faded and often frayed spine.

CONDITION: Original blue cloth, silver lettering spine, small silver decoration front & spine. Original dust jacket (chipping at spine ends up to 5mm deep, rubbed corners, clipped flap corner), book with faded spine, gift inscription on blank FFEP; otherwise, VG with no other previous owner marks or writing on any pages. Price: $45.
