MOUNTAINEERING AND EXPLORATION IN

THE SELKIRKS

by HOWARD PALMER

1914 FIRST EDITION

SUPERB BOOK

OVER 200 EARLY PHOTOS

This is the first printing of the first USA edition of MOUNTAINEERING AND EXPLORATION IN THE SELKIRKS -- A RECORD OF PIONEER WORK AMONG THE CANADIAN ALPS, 1908-1912 by Howard Palmer. This book was published in New York by G. P. Putnam's Sons in 1914. A hefty volume, it measures 24cm tall x 16cm, and has 439 pages, 2 folding maps, 1 folding diagram, 219 b/w photos, 12 appendices, index. Palmer pioneered several important first ascents including Mt Sir Sandford, Mt Austerity, Mt Adament. Account of 5 summers’ exploration including ascents of the 35 highest peaks in the range. An excellent production, this book compares well with the book quality of the Workman's famous volumes and those of Freshfield and FitzGerald. An important work, the collection of photos spans almost all the peaks in the range. There are few other examples in the mountaineering literature of such a thorough treatment of a mountain range at such an early stage of its exploration.

CONDITION: Original navy cloth, gilt-white-grey dec cover, gilt lettering cover & spine, TEG. A lovely example of the book with clean covers, tight binding, no foxing, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, bright gilt. The only flaw is that some of the white paint on the cover illustration has flaked away but the rest of the paint is stable and well-adhered (see photo -- hard to see because it does not distort the image). Still, this is one of the best condition examples of the book that we have encountered. Price: $350.
