This is the first edition (first printing) of THE ALPS IN 1864: A PRIVATE JOURNAL. It was privately published in London by the author for private distribution. All bibliographic references note that only 100 copies were made, but such a limitation is not stated in the book. It measures 227mm tall x 145mm, has 360 pages, 10 maps. This is one of the rarest of the important alpine climbing books.

CONDITION: The book is bound in contemporary half calf and pebbled green boards, raised bands spine with gilt decorations and gilt lettering, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. The spine ends are rubbed with 3mm deep chip at top edge. There is surface rubbing (loss of color) at spine edges. There is 1cm wide bump (3mm deep) near the middle area of the top edge of the front cover. The binding is solid and tight. Pages are clean and not foxed. There is no writing or previous owner's marks on any pages. Price: SOLD
