This is the first printing of the first edition of DIE ROTE RAKETE AM NANGA PARBAT -- DREHBUCH ZU EINEM FILM, DER NIE GEZEIGT WERDEN KANN by Reinhold Messner. This book was published in 1971 by Nymphenburger in München. The book measures 219mm tall x 126mm, and has 233 pages, 48 b/w & 4 color photos, diagram, 2 maps. Text in german, no translated edition. Messner’s second book, but his first on Himalayan climbing, this was withdrawn from stores and destroyed by the publisher as a result of a court order won by Herrligkoffer accusing Messner of libel. The court ruled in favor of Herrligkoffer since Messner could only offer his word as proof of his statements in the book. Interestingly, Herrligkoffer did not disprove any of Messner’s statements. Consequently, this book is extremely scarce; only very few copies were not destroyed. It is Messner’s account of his climb with his brother of the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat (the first ascent of the route) and their descent via the Diamer side, thus the first traverse of the mountain. Messner’s brother, Günther, perished in an avalanche during the very last part of the descent at the foot of the face and his body was not found until 2005. This discovery fully vindicated Messner's account of the climb. There was a rumor that Herrligkoffer was having even institutional library copies of this book removed from circulation and destroyed when he learned of their existence.
