This is the first printing of the first edition of THE CENTRAL TIAN-SHAN MOUNTAINS 1902-1903 by Dr. Gottfried Merzbacher. This book was published in 1905 by E.P. Dutton & Company in New York. The book measures 229mm tall x 145mm, and has 285, 2pages, 20 b/w photos, folding map, index. Primary exploration of the Tian-Shan mountains and the splendid pyramid shaped Khan-Tengri (6995m) which was long considered the highest mountain in the range. Merzbacher unravelled the complex topography of the range and discovered the 60km long Inylichek Glacier. This is one of the scarcest books on high mountain exploration in Central Asia for this period.

CONDITION: Original ribbed dark navy cloth, gilt lettering cover & spine, TEG, bottom & fore-edge untrimmed. minor fraying very top edge spine, minor darkening along top edge of front cover, binding cracked between gatherings at page 96 but not broken and is holding together strongly (some mesh threads showing, but nothing broken), chip with loss to the upper edge of the frontispiece tissue guard, unread copy with many unopened pages, tight binding, bright gilt, no foxing, clean covers, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, near Fine.
