BECAUSE IT IS THERE

BY GEORGE LOWE

1959 FIRST EDITION

SIGNED BY GEORGE LOWE

MOUNT EVEREST -- ANTARCTICA

This is the first printing of the first edition of BECAUSE IT IS THERE by George Lowe. This book was published in London by Cassell in 1959. This book has been signed by the author, George Lowe, on the title page in blue pen. The book measures 217mm tall x 140mm, and has 216 pages, 35 b/w photos, 6 maps. Lowe was a member & photographer on first ascent of Everest expedition & on Fuch’s successful trans-Antarctic expedition. The first fifty pages are on the Everest expedition. The rest of the book is on Vivian Fuch’s successful trans-Antarctic expedition, with interesting section comparing leadership qualities and personalities of Hillary, Hunt and Fuchs. Lowe almost certainly would have made the first ascent of Everest had he been picked to be on the summit team. He made the final heavy carry to the highest camp breaking trail nearly all of the way. He was climbing exceptionally strongly throughout the expedition.

CONDITION: Original blue cloth, silver lettering spine. The book is clean and bright but has some small faint spots on the rear cover (like foxing) that seems to be quite common with this book. Other than Lowe's autograph on the title page there are no previous owner marks or writing on any pages. Tight binding, some fore-edge foxing but no foxing on the page faces. The original dust jacket is worn at the edges and has some loss at the spine corners. Price: $125.
