MOUNTAINEERING IN THE SIERRA NEVADA
BY CLARENCE KING
THE CLASSIC BOOK ON THE SIERRA NEVADA
This is the 1970 paperback edition of MOUNTAINEERING IN THE SIERRA NEVADA by Clarence King. This book was published in Lincoln by The University of Nebraska Press in 1970. The book measures 202mm tall x 132mm and has 292 pages. A classic of US mountaineering literature. Sir Martin Conway wrote of it, “one of the finest books on mountain-travel ever written” (p90 The Bolivian Andes). Ascents of Mt Tyndall, Whitney [not really, since he climbed the wrong mountain], Langley, Clark, Shasta & some Sierra Nevada rambles & survey history. This is the complete text from the 1872 original first edition. King went back to the Sierra Nevada after publishing the first edition and climbed the real Mt Whitney. He amended the chapter on Mt Whitney and republished the book in 1874. This 1970 edition has an introduction by James Shebl describing King's life and his writing. Shebl declares, "Mountaineering In The Sierra Nevada is the first real literature of the Sierra, and as a book of familiar travels in unfamiliar places in America it brooks no equal."
