ROCK-CLIMBING IN THE ENGLISH LAKE DISTRICT
BY OWEN GLYNN JONES
1900 SECOND UK EDITION
THIS EDITION HAS A NEW 38 PAGE MEMOIR OF JONES
This is the second UK edition of ROCK-CLIMBING IN THE ENGLISH LAKE DISTRICT by Owen Glynn Jones. This book was published in Keswick, Cumberland by G. P. Abraham and Sons in 1900. The book measures 24cm tall x 16cm, and has 322 pages + 9 pages of ads, 31 full-page b/w photos + b/w portrait frontispiece, 9 plates of route sketches, index. In 1899 Jones and two guides were killed on the Dente Blanche when the lead guide fell, pulling off Jones and the other before the rope snapped, leaving the fourth climber unscathed. The survivor made a frightening solo descent and reported the accident. This second edition includes a new 38 page memoir of Jones by W.M. Crook that gives a biography of Jones and an account of his final climb where he perished. It also includes a new 22 page appendix by George and Ashley Abraham describing new significant rock climbs in the English Lake District. The first edition of the book appeared in 1897. Jones was one of the first serious rock climbers, making rock climbing a separate sport. He trained hard and sought difficult routes to climb. This is the first book in english devoted strictly to rock climbing as a sport.
