This is the first printing of the first USA edition of IN THE GHOST COUNTRY: A LIFETIME SPENT ON THE EDGE by Peter Hillary and John Elder. This book was published in New York by Free Press in 2003. The book has been inscribed and signed by Peter Hillary on the title page. The book measures 235mm tall x 155mm, and has 341 pages + , 6 b/w photos. Peter Hillary is the son of Everest legend Edmund Hillary. This is Peter's account of his 1998-99 ski expedition to the South Pole repeating Robert Falcon Scott's route. It was a miserable trip which led to days of reflection. Interspersed with the Antarctica account are detailed accounts of Peter Hillary's other expeditions, namely: accident on Ama Dablam, Makalu disaster, his own climb of Everest in 1990, the 1995 K2 season where a storm killed seven climbers including Allison Hargreaves while Hillary was on the mountain wisely aborting his own summit attempt, memories and anecdotes about his family and famous father, the loss of his mother at a young age.
CONDITION: Original blue boards and navy cloth spine with silver lettering. The book has been inscribed and signed by Peter Hillary on the title page. There are no other previous owner marks or writings on any pages. The dust jacket is in fine condition with no tears, no chips, no rubbing. The book is in fine condition, very clean, tight binding, slight toning to pages which is the case with all examples of this book. Price: $25.
