BY KARL M. HERRLIGKOFFER

1956 PAPERBACK EDITION

FIRST ASCENT OF NANGA PARBAT BY HERMANN BUHL

This is the 1956 paperback printing of NANGA PARBAT INCORPORATING THE OFFICIAL REPORT OF THE EXPEDITION OF 1953 by Karl M. Herrligkoffer. This book was published in London by Panther Books in 1956. The book measures 178mm tall x 112mm, and has 208 pages, 9 b/w photos, 8 maps, 2 route diagrams. Account of the 1953 Nanga Parbat expedition the by leader of the expedition. Herrman Buhl made the first ascent of the mountain solo on this expedition. The first 75 pages are a good history of attempts to climb the mountain. Herrligkoffer was obsessed with Nanga Parbat, the peak where his brother, Willy Merkl, perished on the 1934 expedition to the mountain. The 1953 expedition did little to satisfy Herrligkoffer's obsession with the peak and he went on to lead many subsequent expeditions to the mountain, including the first winter attempt, the first ascent of the Diamir Face, and the first ascent of the Rupal Face.
