I COME FROM THE STONE AGE
BY HEINRICH HARRER
1965 FIRST EDITION
THE FIRST ASCENT OF CARSTENSZ PYRAMID
SIGNED BY HEINRICH HARRER
This is the first printing of the first USA edition of I COME FROM THE STONE AGE by Heinrich Harrer. This example has been hand-signed by Heinrich Harrer on the short-title page, the page preceding the title page. This book was published in New York by E. P. Dutton in 1965. The book measures 234mm tall x 156mm and has 256 pages, 5 maps, 38 photos (18 in color). This is the primary account, in diary form, of the first ascent of Carstensz Pyramid, considered by many to be one of the seven summits (the competing opinion views Mt. Kosciusko in Australia as one of the seven summits). This book describes eight first ascents in the Carstensz Range, including the first ascent of Carstensz Pyramid (16500') in 1962 with Philip Temple. It is one of few books on climbing New Guinea’s Mountains. Harrer said that this was his most difficult and dangerous expedition. Temple had previously made an attempt at climbing Carstensz, but not in the company of Harrer, described in his book, Nowak! (if interested, ask if we have a copy of it in stock -- we should). After reading Harrer's and Temple's accounts, and several other mountaineering descriptions that involve approaches through dense tropical jungle, it seems to me that jungle bushwhacking is one of the most unpleasant and challenging forms of adventure travel.
