This is the first edition & first printing in english of THE WHITE SPIDER. THE HISTORY OF THE EIGER'S NORTH FACE. It was published in London by Rupert Hart-Davis in 1959. The book measures 235mm tall x 157mm and has 240 pages, 58 photos (including 4 in colour), chronology of climbs, route info with large folding photo diagram, index. The classic history of attempts and early ascents of this famous face including Harrer’s firsthand account of first ascent in 1938. Author was member of the first ascent team that was comprised of Anderl Heckmair (the leader), Fritz Kasparek, Ludwig Vörg, and Harrer.

This is the first printing of the english translation of the original 1958 german language edition. The first USA printing was in 1960. The book being offered here is the first UK edition published in 1959.

CONDITION: Original blue covers with silver lettering spine. Hand-signed by Heinrich Harrer (the author) and by Anderl Heckmair (leader of the first ascent) on the short title page. Original dust jacket is worn around edges with some flecking at top of spine and tips corners. It is in better condition than average for this DJ which is very prone to wear and flecking. Book is in nice, clean condition with a little browning at extreme ends of spine. Binding is tight and square. No previous owner's marks or writing on any pages. Price: SOLD.
