SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET.

By Heinrich Harrer

TRUE FIRST PRINTING (not book club)

SIGNED by Heinrich Harrer

This is the USA first edition & first printing of SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET. It was published in New York by E.P. Dutton in 1954. The book measures 218mm tall x 140mm and has 314 pages, 46 b/w photos, map. Author escaped from WWII internment camp & trekked to Lhasa. There he became a tutor of the Dalai Lama. “One of the most gripping annals in adventure literature”. The first USA edition states 1953 on copyright page, but has 1954 on title page. It is incorrectly listed in bibliographies and by booksellers as being published in 1953. The first printing of the USA edition was published in 1954.

This is a real first printing of the first edition. Very frequently, Book Club editions are innocently mistaken and represented as first editions. The reason for this is that publishers of the Book Club edition stupidly left the words "first edition" on the copyright page.

BOOK CLUB vs TRUE FIRST EDITION --- THE POINTS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

The first edition (first printing) of this book is frequently confused with the Book Club edition. Since the book was originally a very successful Austrian-German publication, the english-translated edition was grabbed by both established publishers and "The Book Club," a generic publisher. There is very little difference between the Book Club edition and the first edition. Basically, they are the same book and probably they were printed using the same press plates. There is absolutely no difference in the printed text or photos/illustrations. Both the Book Club edition and the Dutton true first edition have "First Edition" printed on the copyright page. However, externally, the Book Club edition has a dimple (punch mark) on the lower area of the spine (see photo), whereas the true first printing does not have the dimple. That is the only, THE ONLY, difference between the Book Club edition and NY Dutton true first edition (excluding DJ). There are more obvious differences in the dust jackets, but only on the flaps. The Book Club edition DJ has points on the flaps that the true first Dutton printings lack (see photos). The true first edition is very much less common than the Book Club edition. The photos with "example" in the caption are not photos of the book offered here. They are from a previous listing which has since been sold. They are provided here only as visual aid to the written explanation. All photos that do not have "example" in the caption are of the book being offered for sale here.
