A HARD DAY'S SUMMER

SIX CLASSIC NORTH FACES SOLO

BY ALISON HARGREAVES

1994 FIRST UK EDITION

FIRST AND ONLY HARDCOVER EDITION IN DUST JACKET

This is the first printing of the first UK edition of A HARD DAY'S SUMMER. SIX CLASSIC NORTH FACES SOLO by Alison Hargreaves. This book was published in London by Hodder & Stoughton in 1994. The book measures 241mm tall x 150mm, and has 158 pages, 24 colour photos, route sketches. Account of authorís single season solos of the 6 big faces of the Alps. She was the first to solo them all. She was a very skilled, strong climber, among the best mountaineers of modern times. In May 1995 she became the (undisputed) first woman to summit Everest alone & unassisted without supplemental O2. Tragically, she died on 13 August 1995 in a sudden storm on K2 after reaching the summit. Honest, clear-headed writing that goes far, unaffectedly, in sharing the joys, motivations, & concerns of an inherently high-stakes pastime. Relatively few copies of this first printing were printed, probably around 2 to 5 thousand copies (more likely 2K). It is now scarce.

CONDITION: Original black boards with gilt lettering spine. Original dust jacket is in fine condition (no chips, no tears, no fading, no soiling), but has the corner of the front flap price-clipped. The book is in fine condition, but has the tips of the corners of the first two (not title) pages clipped (see photos), plus the inevitable tanning of the pages (mostly at the margins), a situation that all copies have due to the paper, ie, no copies of the book (unless locked inside a sealed enclosure at time of publication) are exempt. There are no previous owner marks or writing on any pages. This is a collectible example of the first printing of the book. Price: $95.
