THE CROSSING OF ANTARCTICA
BY VIVIAN FUCHS AND EDMUND HILLARY
1958 FIRST UK EDITION
SIGNED BY VIVIAN FUCHS DIRECTLY ON THE TITLE PAGE
This is the first printing of the first edition of THE CROSSING OF ANTARCTICA by Vivian Fuchs and Edmund Hillary. This book was published in London by Cassell in 1958. The book has been inscribed and signed by Fuchs directly on the title page. Most copies signed by Fuchs have the signature pasted in on a piece of expedition note paper or specially designed signature plates. Examples signed directly on a page in the book (like this one) are much less common. The book measures 228mm tall x 140mm, and has 338 pages, 63 b/w & 30 colour photos, 9 maps, index. The official account of the Commonwealth Trans-Atlantic Expedition 1955-58 which made the first crossing of the continent. Rather dull reading, but an historically important book. There are a couple of places in the narrative where Fuch's sharp wit and humor surface unexpectedly, but the reader must fight to stay awake to find them.
CONDITION: Original blue cloth with silver lettering spine. The book has some foxing spots on the spine cloth otherwise it is in fine condition. Inscribed and signed by Fuchs on the title page. No foxing on pages. Clean pages. Tight binding. The dust jacket has a browned spine and some rubbing at the spine corners, no other problems. Price: $95.
