THE CONFESSIONS OF ALEISTER CROWLEY
edited by John Symonds and Kenneth Grant
This is the second edition of THE CONFESSIONS OF ALEISTER CROWLEY: AN AUTOHAGIOGRPHY edited by John Symonds and Kenneth Grant. This book was published in 1986 in London by Routledge & Kegan Paul. This has the same contents and format as the 1979 first corrected edition. Crowley wrote this book years earlier, intending it to be several volumes long. Two volumes were published then. Symonds and Grant edited and annotated much to create the present work. This book measures 235mm tall x 153mm, and has 960 pages, 34 b/w photos, 4 sketches, and an index. This is the autobiography of Crowley, notorious moral & social anarchist, rogue poet, drug abuser, satanist, & onetime mountaineer. This account was narrated prior to 1929 to a consort mostly while he was strung-out on heroin. Includes his introduction to climbing & prominent climbers in the UK, considerable amount on his climbs with Eckenstein (including Mexico), a chapter on the first attempt to climb K2 in 1902 (62pp), and the attempt on Kangchenjunga in 1905 (29pp). Crowley has been credited by several mountaineering writers as having been brilliant & ahead of his time in his understanding of the highest mountains & their imposed effects on mountaineering. This myth has grown due to the popularity of Crowley’s book & the scarcity of the others’ accounts of the expeditions. In fact, the mountaineering insights credited to Crowley—tacitly and, more often, overtly claimed by Crowley as his own in this book—can be found mentioned casually in his climbing companions’ much earlier accounts without there being any credit or association of such ideas to Crowley. Still, Crowley, a brilliant, self-aggrandizing poseur, possessed charm and insights that continue to attract interest and curiousity. While in a good mood, he was probably a delightful travelling companion.
