This is the first printing of the first edition of CLIMBING ON THE HIMALAYA AND OTHER RANGES by J. Norman Collie. This book was published in 1902 by David Douglas in Edinburgh and by Charles Scribner's Sons in New York. The book measures 227mm tall x 144mm, and has 315 pages, 18 b/w photos & sketches, 3 colored folding maps, bibliography, index. One of the most important books of 20th Century climbing literature. Collie was one of the original climbing bums, despite having a distinguished professional scientific career. This covers in detail the first serious attempt to climb an 8000er, Nanga Parbat, where Mummery & his partners (porters) perished. This also has content on the author's climbs and explorations in the Canadian Rockies (discovery of the Columbia Icefield), Norway, Skye, classic firsts in the Chamonix Aiguilles with Mummery, etc. The first edition of this book is very uncommon in any condition.

CONDITION: Original ribbed green cloth with gilt lettering spine, TEG. Ex-library with library stamp on title page and number penned to verso of title page, traces of pocket or sticker pulled from EPs, spine number erased and re-colored making it less obvious to see, no other library marks, plates and maps have no library marks, no writing or marks on pages, no foxing, tight binding. Covers have been thinly coated with a clear laquer and are relatively clean and not worn. Price: SOLD.
