CANADIAN ROCKIES AND SELKIRKS

This is the first printing of the 1907 edition of THE CHALLENGE OF THE MOUNTAINS by The Canadian Pacific Railway Company. This book was published in 1907 by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company in Montreal. There were a series of these booklets published from about 1902 to about 1912, though it appears that the first with this title appeared in 1904. Each edition other than the 1904 and 1905 editions have much of the text rewritten and many of the photos changed to reflect developments and growing tourist attractioins. This is mainly a descriptive guide to what is visible and accessible (via carriage or trail) from the CPR line and hotels. It also gives some details about construction of the line. There is a small amount of mountaineering content on several pages. Nearly all of the content is on the Canadian Rockies and Selkirks, with the Canadian Rockies having the most. The cover art on most of these is different for each issue. These booklets were most likely either sold or given away as promotional items. They are now very scarce and hard to find. The book measures 190mm tall x 132mm, and has 75 pages + 5 pages ads at end, 63 b/w photos, folding map of the railway lines.

CONDITION: Original white wrappers with front cover illustration in color of a woman in a cape, skirt, red sweater, standing atop a rock below a mountain holding a super long ice axe with the pick resting on the rock, CPR emblem in blue-navy-black on rear cover, pages bound by publisher with two sturdy staples with cover mounted on top. Previous owner name penned in mostly faded ink to the top edge of the front cover, different previous owner name and address stamped in ink to lower front cover (much of the stamping has faded) and stamped to the lower blank inside of the rear cover with some bleed-through to the rear cover (see photos), no other marks or writing in the book, tiny loss to lower outside cover corners, no foxing, solid binding, some diffuse soiling (not bad) to covers. Generally good condition for an item that is usually found with very worn or even missing covers. Price: $150.
