This is the 1949 "special edition" of UTTERMOST PART OF THE EARTH by E. LUCAS BRIDGES. This book was published in New York by E.P. Dutton in 1949. It is unclear what "special edition" refers to since this is identical to the UK first printing of 1948 that does not have "special edition" printed on the copyright page. There is nothing distinguishing it from the first UK printing other than the changes on the copyright page, date, and publisher information. This 1949 "special edition" is probably the first printing for the USA edition. I have never encountered a 1949 USA edition without "special edition" printed on the copyright page. The 1948 UK edition does not have "special edition" printed on the copyright page. There is no 1948 USA edition. The book measures 247mm tall x 155mm, and has 538 pages, 97 b/w photos, 5 maps (three are folding), index. Fascinating autobiography of Bridges, his pioneering life in Tierra del Fuego, 1874-1910. This is perhaps the most extensive and intimate account of the indigenous Yahgan and Ona people of the area. Included are details of meeting Dr Cook with the Belgian antarctic expedition, and an appendix on the illicit appropriation by Dr Cook of the lifework of the author’s father, Thomas Bridges, a Yamana-English dictionary where the Yamana entries were painstakingly spelled phonetically. The Lucas family had allowed Cook to take the manuscript with him upon his return from Antarctica, with the understanding that he would present it to an academic society in the USA for publishing. Instead, Cook attempted to have the book published under his own name for 22,000 francs by the Observatoire Royal in Brussels. The author describes some exploration, but the majority of the narrative is on his life and work with the early settlers and indigenous tribes.

Clean covers, minor fading spine, light cover wear, small previous owner name & address sticker on corner of front pastedown otherwise no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, tight binding.
