Explorations In The Highlands Of Peru

By

Hiram Bingham

1922 FIRST PRINTING

with rare Dust Jacket

This is the first printing of the first edition. It was published in Boston by Houghton Mifflin in 1922. It measures 232mm tall x 151mm and has 365 pages, 6 maps, 55 b/w photos, glossary, biblio, index. Account of 1909-15 Peruvian expeditions including detailed account of first ascent of Coropuna (6427m) near Arequipa. Also includes exploration of Vilcabamba Range & discovery of Machu Picchu, one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the Western Hemisphere. This is Bingham's first account of the discovery in book form. Bingham's son, in the biography of his father, shows that Bingham did not climb the highest summit of Coropuna. He presents photographic evidence of Bingham's photo of the N Summit as viewed from the summit that he climbed. It clearly is higher. Modern surveys have now established the heights beyond any doubt.
