MOUNT MCKINLEY AND MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS' PROOFS

BY EDWIN SWIFT BALCH

1914 FIRST EDITION

ONE OF THE SCARCEST MOUNTAINEERING BOOKS ON DENALI

This is the first printing of the first edition of MOUNT MCKINLEY AND MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS' PROOFS by Edwin Swift Balch. This book was published in 1914 by Campion And Company in Philadelphia. The book measures 266mm tall x 171m, and has 142 pages, 1 map, index. The author analyzes the expeditions by Cook, Lloyd, Browne, and Stuck. He concludes that Cook made the first ascent. Most of his arguments are quite reasonable. The major flaws in his arguments result from lack of analysis of obvious & significant features/aspects not mentioned or described by Cook and Lloyd in their claims to have reached the main South Summit, i.e., ignoring the absence of key evidence of the ascent (plus a botched analysis of Cook's summit photograph). Very uncommon book. Most copies of this book were given to libraries by the author.

CONDITION: Original red buckram with gilt lettering cover & spine, TEG. Ex-library with library bookplate on front pastedown, sticker and date due slip at rear, blindstamp on title page and library number penned to verso of title page, no other library marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, tight binding, complete, some fading to spine, rubbing upper front cover near spine, rubbing spine ends. Price: $285.
