THE CONQUEST OF FITZROY

By M. A. AZEMA

1957 FIRST USA PRINTING

This is the 1957 original first printing of the first USA edition of THE CONQUEST OF FITZROY by M. A. AZEMA. It was published in Fair Lawn, New Jersey by Essential Books, Inc. in 1957. The book measures 215mm tall x 137mm, and has 237 pages, 19 b/w photos, 6 maps/ diagrams, glossary. Classic account of first ascent of the windswept tower in Patagonia, Cerro Fitz Roy. Guido Magnone & Lionel Terray were the summiters. The expedition started off tragically when team member Jacques Poincenot (who very likely would have summited) drowned while attempting to ford a swift stream on the approach, held underwater by the current, unable to release himself from a fixed rope.

CONDITION: Original textured blue boards, spine lettered in gilt. Original dust jacket (rubbing tips corners with loss up to 1mm, 4mm tear upper rear, price-clipped flap corner). The book is in nice condition with no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, tight binding, no foxing, some patterned browning to the EPs (very common for this book). Price: $65.
